HPA STRP GHANA, AFRICA RESEARCH PROJECT
Goal of HPA Sea Turtle Research Program’s Ghana Research Trip
Visit the Blog to Follow the Olive Ridley Turtles Soyo and Korkor
The program seeks to initiate a satellite telemetry project in Ghana to investigate the post-nesting migrations of olive ridley sea turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea). This project will depend upon securing support from community stakeholders and regulatory agencies within Ghana. To date, the program has secured three Telonics SeaTrkr GPS/Iridium satellite tags, with the potential to acquire additional tags to expand the study’s scope. All of our work has an educational portion to engage students from Hawaii and work to share our knowledge, expertise, and culture with host communities we work in.
Our collaborators are Dr. Andrews Agyekumhene, Lecturer in the Department of Marine and Fisheries Science at the University of Ghana and Akwasi McLaren with Ghana Instinct, a pioneering NGO in the Western Region of Ghana which is dedicated to promoting sustainable living, global collaboration, and environmental conservation through innovative practices and community education.
