Turtle Independence Day, 2025
Independence Day has arrived and it is time to celebrate by joining Malama Honua, Malama Honu and release their Honu back into the Pacific Ocean. This year, they have four 2 year old honu that were hatched and raised at Sea Life Park on Oahu. On July 3rd, Marc Rice, Laura Jim and members of the HPA summer program SCUBA group gathered at Mauna Lani Auberge Resort to measure and weigh and complete a health assessment of the four Sea Life Park Juvenile honu. After the health assessment, the four honu were returned to their pond for the night.
At 0930 hours on July 4th, members of the Malama Honu staff recaptured the turtles and began the activity that would culminate in the release of each of the honu back into Hawaiian waters. The HPA Sea Turtle Research Program’s Laura Jim, Marc Rice, Robin Scarth and her daughter Pemma set up a educational booth that explained sea turtle biology, ecology and covered some current research project. Below are some pictures of the activities on July 3 and July 4.
