KAHO honu health assessment (4/23/25)

Laura Jim, Robin Scarth. Marc Rice and 14 HPA students traveled to Kaloko-honokohau National Historical Park to conduct a honu health assessment/tagging.  We arrived at the site at 0830 and set up our equipment before beginning capture work at 0900 h.  We were able, during the course of the day, to capture, tag and conduct health assessment on 21 honu.  All twenty one turtles appeared healthy and have been growing at a normal pace for West Hawaii turtles.

Of the 21 honu captured, 19 were recaptures and 2 were new captures.

The table below lists the recaptured turtles, how long they have been in the wild between measurements and the calculated rate of growth in cm/year.  The average rate of growth for the 19 turtles was 1.2 cm/yr.

Above are a few pictures taken  at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park.
